Performance of the Singapore Harmonica Virtuoso-Tang Yuen Wai

Singapore's leading musician, educator and performer in the art of harmonica, Mr. Tang Yuen Wai also the President of the Singapore Harmonica Instructors and Development Centre. He taught himself to play the tremolo harmonica at the age of 10, and was able to master its solo techniques for playing Chinese tunes on it. In secondary school, he picked up the chromatic harmonica and this expanded his knowledge on the harmonica through playing and studying the western classical music literature. He is well versed in many other instruments most notably the Cello, the Chinese Er Hu, and many more. Being involved in many different musical ensemble performances allowed him to explore and experiment with various instruments, thus allowing him to gather musical experiences.

Performance of the Singapore Harmonica Virtuoso-Kelvin Ng

With a powerful yet musical harmonica style, Kelvin Ng is acknowledged as a master of blues harmonica by his peers. Coupled with a strong and soulful voice, he is recognised as a major blues talent in Singapore and the region. While he understands the nuances of the blues deeply and is often steep in tradition, he and his band are constantly exploring new rhythms and sonic textures to create fresh and original sounds. Enthusiastic about performing live, he has shared the stage with various international blues and roots acts such as the Holmes Brothers (US), Harry Manx (Canada), Enrico Crivellaro (Italy) and Phil Manning (Australia). Known as Smokey in the local music scene, he has performed with local music legends like Jeremy Monteiro and Siva Choy, and popular local bands like ublues and Ronin. Highly adaptable to other forms of music, Kelvin has recorded harmonica for Mandarin pop superstars such as Jacky Cheung, Stephanie Sun and Na Ying. He played on the theme song for local Chinese TV drama series "Toa Payoh".

Malay Cultural Dance

The Republic Polytechnic’s Tarian group, also known as Dharma, aims at preserving the elegance of traditional Malay dance as well as exploring the vibrancy of the contemporary. Dharma has often been invited to perform at many significant events like Platform Campus as part of Singapore Arts Festival 2010, Momentum – RP’s Dance Festival and the Asia Tri Jogja Dance Festival 2007 that was held at Jogjakarta, Indonesia. The dancers’ commitment to their craft makes them a group much respected for their elegance and their creative energy that constantly seeks to explore new boundaries in the Malay dance scene.

Indian Cultural Dance

Bhangra, in the traditional sense, is a folk dance and not a genre of music. It is the most popular of the community dances which originated from the villages of Punjab, India .The folk dance is performed in celebration of the incoming wheat harvest in the month of Vesak(April) .Farmers gather in open fields in answer to the beat of the dhol and singing of Boliyan (lyrics). Kohinoor Bhangra has established itself as Singapore’s premier bhangra troupe. Kohinoor prides itself in its professionalism and commitment to the folk dance as a way of bridging the past and the present. Kohinoor seeks to continue to showcase the dance form of their culture not just in Singapore but on a world stage as well.
